#13 Lucky
Someone new moved in upstairs
Who seems completely unawares
Of how we can hear every single stupid sound he makes.
Today in the early early morny
He and his boyfriend were quite horny
And now I know every single moan when each one gives and takes.
Now as they stomp and clomp and squeak
I find I feel like quite the freak
Plotting murder and dumping their body parts in lakes
#12 Bathroom Work Poem
Originally created for the bathroom door at work:
Because of an unreliable lock,
If the door is closed, it's best to knock.
Alternates, thought of later:
Since our lock is unreliable,
The benefit of knocking is undeniable.
or
Because our lock doesn't always work,
Best to knock first and not be a jerk.
#11 To Catch A Fish
To catch a fish is rather nice
A very humbling feat
Especially in solid ice
With very little heat
To cut a tiny fishing hole
Drop lure and hope and pray
And feel a tug upon your pole
Reel in and shout "hooray!"
For catching fish can be a joke
With nets and boats and men
But if you snag one in one poke
You'll live to fish again.
#10 Reality TV
I want to write a play
About someone who went on a TV show
Like American Idol, or something like that
And looked like a fool
And failed
And came back home
And now faces fame that backfired.
I will write that play.
#9 Three behind
Three poems behind.
An abomination.
An assault on creativity.
A failure of my own making.
If I were an architect, my building would have toppled,
a pile of rubble
broken bricks of unwritten words
scattered ash of scribbled nonsense
Notes lost.
#8 The Labyrinth (the movie)
Could it be that The Labyrinth is
just one big metaphor for anxiety?
That Sarah has to navigate
A seemingly endless series of dead ends and narrow passages
To free herself from a Goblin King
Who has no power over her.
Toby, her baby brother,
represents herself as unencumbered being.
And her friends
Who she has pushed away
Are only needed once she is free.
Maybe it's more about addiction
As Jareth is a powerful
and sexy
and enticing creature
But so dangerous.
Loving him means demise
And losing him means you watch the world you built
crumble into blackness.
Maybe Sarah is addicted to her anxiety.
She needs the isolation that it brings
but knows that it's unhealthy.
It's difficult
sometimes
to find which parts
are garbage
and which
are truth.
#6 Creativity Conundrum
Why is it
That the most inspired I feel
Is when I am watching
Someone else's terrible work?
And yet when I go home
Ready to write
I think of nothing
But my own
terrible ideas.
#5 Ode to an Oyster
O! Slimy scrap of sea meat
Sliding slowly off your shiny shell
Slipping saltily
I savor you
I slurp your brine
I smile
